FIVE TOWNS BOATBUILDING

Employment Vacancies.

January 2003. Welder and Fabricator.

We are currently looking for a skilled boatbuilder, to work on the steelwork fabrication side of the business. The vacancy is a permanent position subject to a trial period.

We build canal narrowboats to a high standard, and have a growing order book. In order to meet this demand, additional steelwork employees are being sought. Our company is small and friendly with an excellent existing workforce.

The work involves welding with MIG, and stick, gas cutting with oxy propane, grinding and linishing with 9 inch grinders. In addition, you will be skilled at fabrication, and be able to construct steelwork to accurate dimensions, with due regard to distortion control. Your welding skills should be 1st class, with the ability to weld uphill, downhill, underhand, with the minimum of blemishes. Your gas cutting skills should include working freehand to marked curves of small and large radius, and cutting along a straight edge accurately. You will also need to be able to measure accurately, use a trysquare and be able to see when something does not look right. As many of the cuts are long curves, an eye for smoothness of line is desirable in this job.

The fabrication side is mainly involved with large sheets of steel, of different thicknesses that form the hulls and cabins of narrowboats. Basically, the ends are curved, and the middle part of the boat is flat! An ability to use drilling equipment is essential, and also the use of taps and dies.

Preference will be given to applicants who have boatbuilding experience, but if your skills match the above, we can teach you the rest. You will be expected to work and produce results; initiative to identify work that needs doing without asking would be an advantage.

We work from 8.30 to 5.30, with morning, lunchtime, and afternoon breaks.

Wages paid will depend on your skill level; if you can work quickly and efficiently, without mistakes; and without compromisinq quality, you will be rewarded acordingly.

Please send your CV to Roger Fuller; 1 Whitebridge Lane, STONE, Staffordshire; ST15 8LQ, with an SAE. Or e mail me; roger@canalnarrowboats.com.
